1.Current UMIN system - The fourth UMIN System - Infrastructure for the Japanese medical community

Many useful services provided by UMIN attract academic societies, research groups, and individual medical professionals. As a result, the number of registered users has reached about 138,000 and web access is more than six million page views per month. Many user accounts themselves attract information service providers, such as academic societies, medical schools, etc. Now, such organizations have come to propose new ways of using UMIN; for examples, on-line evaluation of lectures and bedside learning in medical schools, an on-line incident reporting system for university hospitals, etc.Considering the large number of users and growing roles of UMIN, the fourth UMIN system is designed to possess higher reliability and load capacity than its past systems have had. All the servers and network equipment are duplicated, and all the disk drives installed have RAID architecture.

2.Current services of UMIN

Currently UMIN provides a large variety of services for medical professionals as follows:

a)Databases and other information services

Databases and other information currently provided are listed on the table.

b)Information service support

UMIN offers open and member-only web hosting services, VOD hosting services, etc.

c)Communication support

UMIN provides email service, news service, mailing list hosting service, bulletin board service, etc. Among them, mail list hosting services are very popular, and currently more than 2,000 mailing lists are operated.

d)Data collection support

In addition, to the on-line abstract entry system for academic meetings and on-line data entry system for clinical and epidemiological research as mentioned, UMIN provides several university hospital statistics entry systems.
